Used Oil Recycling & Re-Refining

Compliant collection, re-refining and responsible disposal of used lubricating oil and industrial waste oil — protecting the environment and recovering valuable base oils.

Turning Waste Oil Into a Valuable Resource

Used lubricating oil and industrial waste oil represent one of India's most underutilised secondary resources. India generates millions of litres of waste oil annually from automotive engines, industrial machinery, hydraulic systems, transformers and metal cutting operations — yet a significant proportion is still burned illegally, dumped, or otherwise disposed of in ways that contaminate soil and groundwater. Peak Idea Corporation LLP's Oil Recycling division provides a legally compliant, environmentally responsible and economically efficient solution for all categories of used oil waste.

Used oil is classified as hazardous waste under Schedule II of the Hazardous Waste (Management, Handling and Transboundary Movement) Rules in India. Any facility generating, storing, or disposing of used oil must comply with HWM Rules requirements — including maintaining records, filing annual returns and ensuring disposal only through CPCB-authorised recyclers. Our team provides complete HWM compliance support alongside our collection and recycling services, ensuring your facility has no regulatory exposure from its waste oil management practices.

The re-refining of used lubricating oil is one of the most energy-efficient recycling processes available — producing base oil that requires only 1/3 of the energy needed to refine crude oil to the same grade. Through modern hydrotreatment and solvent extraction technologies, used lubricating oil can be re-refined to Group I, II, or III base oil specifications, suitable for blending back into finished lubricants. Our network of authorised re-refiners produces HSWO (High Speed Diesel), furnace oil and re-refined base oil from waste oil streams and we work with a range of authorised co-processors for used oil fractions that are unsuitable for re-refining. Every litre of oil recycled through our programme keeps hazardous materials out of the environment and conserves precious petroleum resources.

Why Manage Used Oil Through Peak Idea

Full HWM Compliance

Complete documentation package including HWM manifest, waste transfer notes and recycler authorisation certificates ensures your facility is fully compliant with Hazardous Waste Management Rules and protects against PCB inspections.

Scheduled Collection Service

Regular collection from your site using CPCB-authorised hazardous waste tankers with trained drivers, HWM manifest documentation and GPS tracking — customised to your generation volumes and storage capacity.

Quality Testing & Categorisation

Incoming used oil is tested for viscosity, flash point, water content and contamination level to determine the optimal recycling route — re-refining, co-processing, or energy recovery — maximising resource value.

Revenue Sharing for High-Grade Oil

High-quality used motor oil suitable for re-refining commands a positive value and we pass a fair share of this value back to generators, making responsible disposal economically attractive rather than costly.

Carbon Footprint Reduction

Re-refining used oil saves approximately 85% of the energy compared to refining virgin crude oil to produce equivalent base oil — a significant contribution to your Scope 3 emissions reduction and circular economy credentials.

Annual Return Filing Support

We prepare and submit your annual HWM returns to the State PCB on your behalf, maintaining a complete record of all waste oil generated, stored and disposed of throughout the year for regulatory audit purposes.

Our Used Oil Management Process

01
Waste Profile Assessment

We conduct an on-site assessment of your used oil volumes, storage facilities, generation frequency and contamination levels to design an optimal collection schedule and determine the most appropriate recycling technology for your specific waste oil characteristics.

02
Hazardous Waste Manifest Preparation

All collections are preceded by proper HWM manifest preparation, identifying the waste type, quantity, generator details, transporter details and authorised recycler details as required under HWM Rules for each consignment.

03
Scheduled Collection & Transport

Authorised hazardous waste tankers collect the waste oil and transport it to our processing partner facility under the accompanying HWM manifest. Signed manifest acknowledgements are returned to the generator as required by regulations.

04
Re-Refining or Co-Processing

Waste oil is processed through the appropriate technology — hydrotreatment or solvent extraction for re-refining to base oil, or co-processing in authorised cement kilns or other thermal processing facilities for oils unsuitable for re-refining.

05
Documentation & Compliance Reporting

Processing certificates, manifest confirmations and annual HWM returns data are compiled and provided to your team, with our regulatory affairs specialists available to support any PCB correspondence or inspection requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of used oil do you collect and recycle?
We collect all categories of used lubricating and industrial oil including used engine oil (automotive and industrial), used hydraulic oil, used gear oil, used turbine oil, used transformer oil (non-PCB), used cutting and metalworking fluids, used compressor oil and used heat transfer fluids. Each category is tested and routed to the appropriate processing technology.
Is used oil storage at our facility regulated?
Yes. Used oil stored at industrial facilities in quantities above specified thresholds must be stored in properly labelled containers, in bunded storage areas with spill containment, away from drains and water bodies and must be recorded in a hazardous waste register. Facilities generating more than specified quantities must also obtain HWM authorisation from the State PCB. We advise on appropriate storage practices during our site assessment.
What is the difference between used oil re-refining and co-processing?
Re-refining is the preferred option — it removes contaminants and additives from used lubricating oil to produce fresh base oil suitable for blending into new lubricants. Co-processing uses waste oil as a substitute fuel and raw material in cement kilns, recovering its energy content. Re-refining is environmentally preferable as it preserves the full material value of the oil, while co-processing is used for oils that cannot be economically re-refined.
Can you handle transformer oil contaminated with PCBs?
PCB-contaminated transformer oil requires specialised disposal under the Hazardous Waste Management Rules and Stockholm Convention requirements. We do not process PCB-contaminated oil through standard used oil channels, but can arrange specialised disposal through authorised PCB treatment facilities. All transformer oil collected is tested for PCB content before processing.
Do you provide used oil management services for vehicle fleets?
Yes. We provide fleet used oil management services for bus depots, truck fleets, logistics companies, railways and government vehicle pools — scheduling regular collections, providing temporary storage tanks where required, managing all HWM documentation and filing the necessary regulatory returns on behalf of fleet operators.
