Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

Complete EPR compliance solutions — registration, PRO services, plastic waste management, e-waste, battery and tyre waste obligations under Indian law.

Navigating India's EPR Framework With Confidence

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is one of India's most important environmental policy tools, placing the obligation on producers, importers and brand owners (PIBOs) to ensure responsible end-of-life management of the products and packaging they place on the Indian market. With the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) having substantially strengthened EPR regulations across plastics, e-waste, batteries and tyres, compliance has become a critical legal and reputational obligation for thousands of businesses operating in India.

Peak Idea Corporation LLP's Environmental division provides end-to-end EPR compliance services that take the complexity and administrative burden of EPR obligations off your plate entirely. Our team of EPR specialists, environmental lawyers and compliance managers has deep expertise across all four EPR streams — Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 (amended 2022), E-Waste Management Rules 2022, Battery Waste Management Rules 2022 and Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 — ensuring your business meets its collection, channelisation and reporting targets under each applicable regulation.

Whether you are a multinational corporation seeking to centralise your India EPR compliance, a fast-growing Indian brand navigating EPR for the first time, or a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) seeking operational support, Peak Idea delivers the registration services, collection network access, certificate management and regulatory reporting infrastructure you need. We work across all categories of obligated entities including plastic packaging producers and importers, electrical and electronic equipment manufacturers, battery manufacturers and importers and tyre producers — providing tailored compliance programmes that minimise risk and administrative overhead while ensuring full regulatory adherence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is required to register for EPR in India?
Any producer, importer, or brand owner (PIBO) that introduces plastic packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, or tyres into the Indian market is required to register on the CPCB EPR portal and fulfil annual collection and recycling obligations. This includes Indian manufacturers as well as foreign companies importing products into India.
What are the penalties for non-compliance with EPR regulations?
Non-compliance with EPR rules can attract penalties under the Environment (Protection) Act including fines, imprisonment and — for plastics — mandatory purchase of EPR certificates at a penalty rate significantly higher than market rates. Repeated non-compliance can result in business licence suspension. CPCB has been actively enforcing EPR compliance since 2022.
What is a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) and do I need one?
A PRO is a CPCB-registered entity that PIBOs can authorise to fulfil their EPR obligations on their behalf, managing collection, channelisation and certificate procurement. Using a PRO simplifies compliance management. We can act as your PRO or connect you with appropriate registered PROs for specific waste streams.
What documentation is needed for EPR registration?
Documentation requirements vary by rule but typically include company incorporation documents, GST registration, product/packaging details, annual production or import quantities, authorised signatory details and (for e-waste and batteries) details of collection points and take-back mechanisms. We manage the complete documentation preparation and portal submission process.
How are EPR certificates generated and what do they represent?
EPR certificates are generated on the CPCB portal by registered recyclers and dismantlers upon processing waste. Each certificate represents a specific quantity of waste processed in a compliant manner. PIBOs purchase these certificates from recyclers to demonstrate fulfilment of their annual collection obligations. Certificate prices vary by waste category and market conditions.
